As I arrive at Psalm 111, eyes weary from an early morning and a busy week, I’m reminded again about the covenant faithfulness of God. The word covenant catches my eye. What is a covenant?
Covenant by theological definition means: an agreement which brings about a relationship of commitment between God and his people.
I wonder what covenantal relationships look like this side of heaven? It seems so far fetched to expect covenantal relationships to thrive in the throes of trust issues and torn realities.
In a world where covenant has been exchanged for convenience, we stumble at the truth of this Psalm. Have we lost the true value of covenant with our wishy washy ways?
“A covenant is a relationship between two partners who make binding promises to each other and work together to reach a common goal. Covenants define obligations and commitments, but they are different from a contract because they are relational and personal.”
~ The Bible Project
The Bible reminds us over and over again about Gods covenant kindness, His covenant promises, His covenant relationship, His covenant faithfulness.
Jesus demonstrated His covenantal love on the cross.
Luke 22v20 – “In the same way he also took the cup after supper and said, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.”
I look again at the words of this Psalm, v9 “He has ordained his covenant forever.” The Lord has ordained, commanded, established, this covenant forever. He will not go back on His word. He will not change His mind. He is not a man that he should lie.
Numbers 23v19 – “God is not a man, so he does not lie. He is not human, so he does not change his mind.“
Take hold of this truth today. If you are in the middle of something hard and heavy, or if uncertainty has you swinging from one thought to another; if darkness has become far to familiar, or if relationships have become messy – learn to trust the voice of the One who remains true, real, steadfast, solid, faithful, gracious and merciful. Learn to trust the One who carries covenant kindness in His bosom, and take refuge in this place.
Psalm 111:3v4 – “All that he does is splendid and majestic; his righteousness endures forever. He has caused his wondrous works to be remembered. The Lord is gracious and compassionate.”
