I’ve been mulling over Genesis for a few weeks now. I’ve been so blessed by the rich deposits I have found in this book.
Here are a few quick thoughts on Genesis 22:
Abraham lived a life of obedience not convenience.
When God told Abraham to sacrifice his son, this was his response:
Abraham trusted in the Promiser more than the promise. He trusted in the Lord and knew that the Lord would fulfil His promises because that’s who He is. Abraham held on to the character of Christ through the biggest storm in his life.
Abraham trusted God even when he didn’t understand the process. We need to trust in the Promiser of the promise and not the process of the promise.
Abraham didn’t debate God or seek further ‘godly’ counsel – he simply obeyed. He knew what he had to do, so he did it. He didn’t manipulate any stalling tactics, or hamper his journey in any way. Instead, Genesis tells us that ‘he rose early’ and went on his way. What is your level of obedience? Do you respond quickly or hesistantly to Gods call?
Genesis 22: 1-3 – Now it came to pass after these things that God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” Then He said, “Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.” So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey.
When God speaks – do you respond with a “Here I am Lord” answer, like Abraham did? Or do you hide form the Lord like Adam and Eve did?
When we respond out of a place of convenience, we can easily start to walk in the direction of disobedience. Often times, the road of obedience is uncomfortable and it requires us to step outside of our comfort zone into the Kingdom zone.
Abraham walked by faith and not by sight. Too often we’re only comfortable to take a risk when we know what the risk is – we have to assess our risk analysis before we’re ready to move forward in any direction. Abraham simply walked. Even though he wandered, he still walked. Even though he wondered, he still worshiped.
We need to learn to trust in the miraculous, even in the midst of the mundane. God is in the business of miracles.
David Guzik points out that Genesis 22 shows us the very first picture of the ultimate sacrifice: Jesus
- both sons were loved by their father
- both sons were the one and only sons
- both sons offered themselves willingly
- both sons carried wood up the hill of their own sacrifice
- both sons were sacrificed on the same hill
- both sons were delivered form death on the third day
Jesus was the ultimate sacrifice, the Lamb who was slain but then rose again. He demonstrates the victory we have in the cross.
