Change: an act or process through which something becomes different.
As we begin to tackle the tasks of the new year, we often approach them with caution and some hesitation. Change is scary for some. We’re beginning to experience what that looks like in our little family. Yesterday seemed like it was a tough day at school. The first few days always are as routine slowly sets in. My girls came home exhausted.
As we play out the events of the day, Sophie asked me, ‘Mom, why do we have to go to school? Are we going to school tomorrow?‘ I like to take her step by step through her day so that she knows what to expect. ‘But why can’t I stay at home with Mommy?’ was her next question. I responded with a smile.
So often its easier to settle for what we know and what’s comfortable. The familiar is easy. The comfortable is safe. But what if God has more for you? If I keep Sophie at home, she will miss out on all of the fun of school and all the opportunities to build friendships. Similarly, what If I miss out on all that God has for me because I fear to tread out of my comfort zone.
I explain to Sophie that school is good for her and that she will have lots of fun and learn new things. A few minutes into the start of the day and morning ring, Sophie calms down and realizes – hey, this is fun. As she begins to embrace the change, her burden lightens and her heart settles.
As I reflect on this, I learn that I don’t want to miss out on what God has for me. I know that it’s in the place of surrender that I will grow the most. It’s in the scary and uncomfortable moments of life that I learn to lean on Christ. It’s in those moments that I learn to know Him better.
As I surrender my will to Gods plan for my life, I quit fighting and I learn to embrace it – my burden lightens and my heart settles. I walk into a spacious place, a place of freedom. A freedom only found in the embrace of Christ.
“Are you weary, carrying a heavy burden? Then come to me. I will refresh your life, for I am your oasis. Simply join your life with mine. Learn my ways and you’ll discover that I’m gentle, humble, easy to please. You will find refreshment and rest in me.”
